RingConn Gen 1 VS Gen 2

RingConn Gen 1 VS Gen 2

Well, look what we have here, our good old RingConn Gen 1 and its successor the Gen 2. How exciting! Now, if you’re a novice to the RingConn brand, then you’re probably thinking that the thinner-looking ring is the Gen 1. If that’s the case, you’ll be surprised to find out that the opposite is actually the truth. When it comes to smart wearables like these RingConns here, the smaller, slimmer and lighter, the better and more advanced. We should also take note of the very obvious fact which is that the Gen 2 is much, much glossier than the Gen 1. See that shine? Definitely a welcomed improvement.

Physicality

Dimensions & Weight

So, since we have established the differences between the two rings when it comes to surface-level appearances, let’s dive straight in to the physicality of the 2 devices. Gen 1 of the RingConn measures at a thickness of 2.6mm with a width of 7.8mm, weighing as low as 3 grams. Gen2 on the other hand, measures at a thickness of 2mm, with a width of 6.8mm and weighing as low as 2 grams. At the time of this post, the RingConn generation 2 holds the title of the thinnest and lightest smart ring. Impressive isn't it?

Perhaps, now is time to move on to more technical parts of this comparison.

Technological Advancements

You may be wondering, “how could the Gen 2 be smaller and more advanced than the Gen 1?” That’s a valid question! As laymen, we believe that added features in tech, corresponds with increased size and bulk to a device. While that is true for some forms of technology, it does not apply here with this particular smart ring..

Due to constant technological advancements, the Gen 2 is now equipped with better and far more efficient hardware.  As compared to the RingConn Gen 1, the Gen 2 has been fitted with advanced microelectronics. “What does that mean?” I’ll walk you through it.

Advanced Microelectronics

The Gen 2 makes use of smaller and more complex electronic parts that allow for the ring to carry arduous tasks out such as constantly tracking, collecting and processing multiple sets of data all at once while only having to consume only little bits of power at a time.

Within the Gen 2, miniaturised electronic parts such as integrated circuits [ICs], sensors and more are used to carry out the key functions of the ring. The use of low-power ICs, highly competent power management circuits and optimised sensors enhances functions such as the ring’s PPG sensor, temperature sensor and 3D  accelerometer, making the Gen 2 ever more efficient than the Gen 1.

Now…let’s talk software.

Software

Sleep Apnea Monitoring

Nope, this isn't a sleep-tracking replacement, but rather an addition. Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 RingConn possess sleep-tracking abilities. Gen 2 however, is currently the first ever smart wearable to provide a sleep apnea monitoring function. A function absent in the Gen 1, and a feat of human invention indeed!

RingConn Mobile App

Currently, when your RingConn Gen 1 is connected to your mobile device, it will provide you with an interface similar to the one shown when the Gen 2 is connected. There are, however, 2 differences. Unlike the Gen 1 the Gen 2 provides insights on the battery life of not just your smart ring, but also its home, the charging case. Neat, right?

In addition, as previously mentioned, RingConn’s newest data-tracking feature is sleep apnea monitoring. Since the Gen 2 now provides this service to its wearers, it, of course, needs an outlet to display all recorded information. Hence another addition to the already well-established RingConn mobile app.

Water Resistance

The water resistance status of both gen 1 and gen 2 are on par. Both models are rated IP68. “So they can reach equal maximum depth right?” Nope!

While the Gen 1 is capable of resisting water up to depths of 50 metres, the Gen 2 doubles the capabilities of its predecessor by being able to reach the maximum depth of 100 metres. Go worry-free while having fun in the water!

Battery Life

Battery life. The most anticipated improvement. Gen 1 of the RingConn had a relatively long battery life of 7 days on a single charge. For a smart wearable meant to be worn 24/7, 7 days is already pretty impressive. Now, allow me to blow your socks off.

The battery life of the Gen 2 on just a single charge lasts for around 10-12 days. What’s more impressive is, with the use of its charging case, this upgraded smart ring is capable of lasting for up to 150 days. Are your socks still on? Doubt it.

Here's a side-by-side Gen 1 & Gen 2 comparison:

So what do you think? Pretty cool huh? It's crazy how devices as tiny as RingConns are capable of so much and still have the potential for more. We’ve barely scratched the surface with this comparison of the Gen 1 and Gen 2.
