What's New for Backbone Pro?

Looking for a new controller? You may have heard of Backbone One 1st or 2nd Generation, which snaps into your mobile phone and turns it into a mobile gaming controller. Now Backbone has a new team player, introducing Backbone Pro!

We know what you’re thinking. The Backbone Pro looks pretty much like Backbone One. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. Let’s look at the details.

Design

The Backbone Pro, like its predecessors, retains much of the design with its extendable backbone (pun intended), and familiar controller button layouts.

What’s new with Backbone Pro is that now the grips have been upgraded to be larger and more ergonomic. In addition to that, the Backbone Pro has full-sized ALPS joysticks and new rear buttons so you’ll feel less fatigued on longer gaming sessions. The texture of the controller has also been improved to hold a better grip compared to Backbone One’s smooth finishing.

New Feature: Bluetooth Connectivity

Unlike the Backbone One models, Backbone Pro supports Bluetooth connectivity! This means you can connect to a wide range of devices beyond your smartphones. Backbone calls it FlowState technology which allows you to seamlessly switch from screen to screen in a tap.

With Bluetooth connectivity, the world of play has expanded. Aside from the usual handheld mode on your smartphone or plugging the controller to your device via USB, Backbone Pro now supports Wireless Mode with up to 40 hours of battery! Lose the phone and game on tablets, laptops, VR headsets and smart TVs seamlessly.

Backbone App

In case you didn’t know, Backbone has a Backbone App that serves as a central hub for all your games and lets you explore and discover what’s new and trending. When you get a Backbone controller, you will need to download the Backbone App to get things started.

Within the app, you can play mobile games from the App Store, Google Play, console games from PlayStation, Xbox or Steam or cloud gaming from Steam, Nvidia GeForce Now and Amazon Luna.

With the Backbone Pro, you can remap buttons and save control profiles within the Backbone App, making it customizable for whatever games you play.

Backbone has also recently introduced Backbone App Emulator which allows you to play your favourite classic games from Game Boy, NES and SNES within the app! A Backbone+ subscription is required to use this feature.

*Do take note that currently the feature is only available to iOS users on version 18.4 or higher.

While Backbone+ subscription does give you access to more perks like capturing, editing and sharing 1080 videos at 60fps videos, in-app voice and text and Twitch live-streaming, it is OPTIONAL and does not take away the fun of playing your games.

TLDR;

What’s new for Backbone Pro:

  • Seamless Bluetooth connectivity from mobile to tablet to PC to smart TV
  • Wireless mode with up to 40 hours of battery life
  • New sculpted, ergonomic grips for long sessions at home or on the go
  • Full sized ALPS joysticks and pro-style rear buttons for console-grade accuracy and feedback

If you’ve been looking for a controller that has low-latency, comfortable grips and precision controls, Backbone Pro might just be the one you need. With its many modes of gameplay and FlowState technology, playing from cloud to console is more seamless than ever.
